When you ride long distances you have to eat and drink to maintain your energy. I take a peanut butter and jam sandwich plus 2 half-litre drinks bottles, one of water and one of juice. Some people advocate much more than this but I think it's a personal thing. I only eat if I am riding for more than 40 miles and I only start drinking when I have done at least 10 miles. Any more than this and I feel bloated. However, there is a fine line between too much and too little and only practice reveals what feels right.

The Intersector uses microwaves to measure the size and speed of oncoming vehicles to determine which are cars and which are bikes. It detects when bikes are coming and changes the timing of the green light to accommodate the slower-moving — and more vulnerable — cyclist. And the city of Pleasanton, California, is one of the first cities in the country to roll out this high-tech solution to help cars and bikes share the road. The signal adds on additional time to allow bikes to pass through safely. A bike, though, takes 14 seconds. And when bicycles are stopped at the red light, they are recognized, and given 14 seconds of green light time to pass — as compared to four seconds when only cars are waiting.
