I hate the bus. Rationally I know that in Brighton we have a good bus service; buses are mostly clean, affordable, and convenient. Yet bus is my nemesis. Not because of the buses themselves, the drivers, my fellow passengers. Oh no, it is the live departure boards that are to blame. Because they lie. A lot.

Such a good idea and when it works it’s great. The smug satisfaction that comes with bowling up to the bus stop to be greeted with the news your bus is due in 2 minutes is glorious. And often short lived. See, the information is often wrong. I have suffered from buses that inexplicably disappear from the board, minutes to wait that go up not down, and buses that are apparently due in 10 minutes (plenty of time to pop into Waitrose) but have come and gone whilst I chose wine. I have also watched buses that definitely weren’t coming any more pulling away when I’ve been a few metres up the road chatting to a friend, resigned to having to wait. Grrr.
