But today, Sarah picked out an emerald and black mountain bike at the Boys & Girls Club Bike Exchange in Newark. Children’s bikes cost from $10 to $25 and adult bikes sell for $100 to $150 with all proceeds going to the Boys & Girls Club. The business model was inspired by a similar initiative in Trenton where Russ White, a retired book publisher and bike shop owner started the Trenton Bike Exchange. "This is the first bike shop of its kind in Newark," said Mayor Cory Booker who said he rides a stationary exercise bike at home. That shop has raised $250,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Trenton and has sold and refurbished 5,000 bikes since it opened in 2009. Sarah Magalhaes, 10, and her two sisters had two bikes among them, and the arrangement made for a long summer of sharing for the Kearny girls.
