Top-notch competition set for weekend's 24-hour Sydney race
Current 24-hour solo mountain bike World Champion, Jason English, is heading up the field competing this weekend at the Jet Black 24-hour race near Sydney, Australia.
The race, held at the Del Rio Resort at Wiseman's Ferry just north of Sydney, is a qualifying event for the 2010 24-hour solo World Championships to be held in Australia in October. English has already qualified, but will be using the race to keep track of his form.

I think most of the drama was not really the jumps, but the 4-X gate which got changed last minute from a drop off to the alternate gate which was simialr to a typical UCI straight. The decision was based on the fact that it was a selection for worlds race, and the officials thought that the course should be as close to Worlds starts as possible. Which makes sense, but the course builders were really disapointed after all the hard work they put in.
You’re riding for KHS. How long have you been riding for them, and what bikes/setups are you on? Women’s racing in the US has dropped off a bit. Not form lack of talent by any means, just the depth in entries at the events. I think a lot of it is b/c it is so costly for them and there is lack of support.[...]
What is a good entry level mountain bike for DH racing?

I am looking for a well constructed, durable downhill bike. I'm not looking to spend something like 3 Grand cheap.

Well built, solid, sorry mate you'll be laying some money ... if you intend to get a bike plush beautiful. And another achievement. 3 Grand is not so much for a good downhill bike.
Inexpensive / cheap bikes for less than $ 2,000 will not last long at all. Thank you God for Craigslist. Motorcycles are your only chance .... real option and used bikes are great, its how I started. Good for motorbikes, whats not to love?
Some bikes you should look on craigslist (about 1000 dollars used)
Specialized Big Hit
Kona Stinky (my favorite, but more freeride)
Jamis Dakar BAM
The Big One Hit May specialize in your price range, but I prefer going to use and get a nice bike for cheap and in good condition (make sure you see it in person before buying)
Check the following before buying a used bike, as always:
-Cracks in the chassis, especially when the seatpost between cycling, this is a weak point for all motorcycles.
-all elements that have been bent back into place
-Make sure the wheels are not waving when tightened down all the way, this means that you may need to redefine the ball (although generally only $ 20 a bike shop)
-check for leaks in the brakes (hydraulic) all the way to lever the caliper, tighten brake hard at first, incase the seller has removed so that you notice. Also check for leaks on the fork and rear shock and compress several times to see if there are leaks.
-Check for rust, rust on the chain goes (cheap to replace), but a rusty derailleur is a sign that the previous owner neglected the bike, and you need to replace a $ 300 component.
-Get the right size
Good luck getting an amazing bike, maybe we'll see on the map on your new bike down Sick ... so remember to save a little money for a helmet and pads DH.
