17 (UPI) -- A year after suffering critical injuries in the Dew Tour Championships in Las Vegas, BMX rider TJ Lavin says he still has trouble maintaining balance on a bike. When I'm riding my bike, it seems like it's going way too fast for me and everything feels really weird. "I've probably been on my bike 10 times since I crashed," he said. If he had been wearing a full-face helmet, he said: "I honestly don't think there is any way I would've been in a coma. Injuries Lavin suffered a year ago required a medically induced coma, and he says he's working out and has begun riding again but has to relearn. Lavin was wearing an open-faced skateboard helmet at the time of the accident. He said the "No. 1 reason" people avoid wearing the full-face helmets is "probably to be cool. I would've gotten knocked out for a minute maybe, or maybe I wouldn't have been knocked out at all.
