Tech Talk: Race Bike On The Cheap

NOTE: Some of the parts came free with the bike. I did all my own labor, including installing the bottom bracket and cranks and overhauling all the bearings in headset and hubs. I also listed retail prices for everything here, but in the interests of full disclosure, I got most of the new parts through my shop and therefore paid far less than retail. For what I make working in a bike shop, getting discounted parts is the least I can expect for my work. I'd subtract another 35% or so on the new parts listed, which would bring the total down to somewhere around $415.00.

Think of Trek's recent success with Bontrager: While the brand lurched into the plain-vanilla territory for a few years after the Wisconsin company bought it, in recent years it's become a desirable aftermarket brand in its own right. In Europe, Scott has extensive distribution and can offer its dealers Syncros products as an aftermarket brand and an exclusive house-brand component on its complete bikes. But in the U. S. , Scott's dealer base is less mature than in Europe, so establishing Syncros as a marquee aftermarket brand may be more difficult.
